Apprenticeship Training

An apprenticeship is made up of 3 components that are designed to help the apprentice achieve the qualification and experience that will help them for the job role/profession.

(1) Technical Certificate - This is the theory part of the qualification. An apprentice will have tutorial on a agreed regular basis to help them gain the knowledge and understanding needed for their job role/profession. This usually is achieved through tutorials, written assignments and observations.

(2) Work Based Qualification - This is the practical aspect of the qualification gained through the apprentices daily role with the employer gaining on the job training and experience.

(3) Functional Skills - Every apprentice is expected to be at a good level when it comes to English, Maths and ICT (Computers). The ICT will vary depending on the qualification. If an apprentice has not achieved a GCSE grade C or above, then as part of the apprenticeship, they will undertake one or more of these to help achieve their qualification and to evidence they are working at a good level in these areas.

What are the costs involved?
There are a few costs involved when taking on an apprentice. As an apprentice is employed by you they are entitled to a wage which is shown below:

The current minimum wage rate for an apprentice is £3.50 per hour.
This rate applies to apprentices under 19 and those aged 19 or over who are in their first year.
You must be paid at least the minimum wage rate for your age if you’re an apprentice aged 19 or over and have completed your first year.

Who pays for apprenticeships has changed on from the 1st May 2017. This change is called the 'Apprenticeship Levy'. Business will come under either as an 'Levy Employers' or 'Non Levy Employers'. All training now comes into funding bands which determine the costs of the training.

Levy Employers - Your organisation will be classed as a Levy paying employer if you have an annual wage bill over £3 million. You pay a levy into a 'Digital Apprentice Service' (similar to online banking). These funds are for you to use to pay for the training.

Non Levy Employers - Your organisation will be classed as a non levy paying employer if you have a wage bill under £3 million. While the government will pay 90% of the cost of the training, the remaining 10% will be at your cost.

Work Experience
As an employer/business, you could help local people develop their employability skills, gain valuable work experience or help them achieve a qualification by providing a quality work placement. It can also help you to build a dynamic and productive workforce. By providing a work experience opportunity, you would also be contributing to the education process and the economy as a whole.

Individuals on work experience can make a real contribution to an organisation too, as they may provide a different perspective as well offering an opportunity for your staff to develop their management skills.
Work experience placements can be anything from 1 day to a few days a week for an agreed length of time (from 6 weeks plus). To make sure that the individual is suited for your environment, MACTAC always arranges an interview between the employer and individual to help determine that work placement will work for both parties. If both parties are happy, we work together around monitoring and supporting the employer and individual during the work placement.
